French or Italian…? Another expression of Nouveau Mediterranean architecture…this retreat utilizes a steep hillside for its footing, tethering beauty and function in an otherwise un-used portion of the property. Of the many criteria defined in the design program, circulation and visual access from the main house were high priorities. Selecting the elevation and position of this space were therefore critical to all other elements. The adjacent hillside planting, an inescapable backdrop for this space, is composed of a woven tapestry of textures and colors designed to offer a low maintenance solution to a very steep slope.
